Untangling the Problem

Limited access to capital perpetuates the cycle of poverty, and there are currently too few viable or sustainable means to disrupt the system.

Widespread Financial Exclusion

Financial inclusion is traditionally defined as a state in which all have access to quality financial services, provided at affordable prices, in a convenient manner, and with dignity for the clients. More than two billion people — approximately half of the world's working-age adult population — have no access to formal financial services. Access to capital can help spur small enterprise activity and improve household welfare. Macroeconomic evidence shows that economies with deeper, more sophisticated financial intermediation grow faster and increase income equality.

Limited Access to Capital

Micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) credit lenders face significant capacity issues, which are rooted in inherent financial limitations, ongoing operational inefficiencies, and a lack of aggregated, reliable data. This results in an imbalance in the distribution of loans, as there are too many barriers between many qualified, would-be borrowers and available capital resources. Given these dynamics, many potential borrowers have ceased trying to access capital altogether, with the sentiment that their situation is hopeless and that “opportunity” lies beyond their reach.
